Introductions - September 20 - 25

While we are all getting registered on the BBS and getting to know one another, you should learn a bit about Nicholas Negroponte

Nicholas Negroponte
Nicholas Negroponte is co-founder and director of the MIT Media Laboratory, where he is also the Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Technology. The Media Lab is currently supported by nearly 170 corporations worldwide, and has led in the development of now-familiar areas such as digital video and multimedia. It now focuses largely on how bits meet atoms: how electronic information overlaps with the everyday physical world.

Readings

For background read the last four columns that Negroponte wrote for Wired magazine.
Note: These articles will each open in a new browser window.

WIRED 6.09 - One-Room Rural Schools
WIRED 6.10 - Being Anonymous
WIRED 6.11 - Pricing the Future
WIRED 6.12 - Beyond Digital
Use these articles as a starting point to think about the issues we will be discussing this semester.

Exercises

Number 1: Create a photo of yourself. This photo MUST be in a jpg format and the size 100w x 100h.

Number 2: Go to the Bulletin Board and register (see tutorial on how to register) . http://www.mystery-productions.info/techno/bulletin_board.html

WARNING: Do NOT pick a 'cute' screen name. Use your REAL name! There are too many of us to have to try and figure out who is hiding behind a screen identity.

Upload your picture when you register for the BBS. We want to know who you are and what you look like.

Introduce yourself to the class. Include some professional information about yourself as well as some personal information. Also include what you hope to get from this class and also why you decided to do a Master's degree.

Get comfortable with the bulletin board, start a 'chit/chat' with each other.
