ABOUT THIS SITE

This website aims to help Year 3 (7-8 year old) primary school children learn about speech marks. It was created in co-operation with teachers and pupils at Garstang Community Primary School in Garstang, Lancashire.

The main site uses the story of Odysseus' encounter with the Cyclops, Polyphemus, as a backdrop for learning about speech marks. The aim is to pull together two strands of the English National Curriculum for 7 and 8 year olds, namely the introduction to speech marks and an introduction to myths, legends and fables.

The site requires the latest version of Macromedia Flash Player to be installed (available for download from the homepage) and is divided into two main sections.

In the first section Odysseus helps explain the basics of the use of speech marks through the use of simple to understand animations.

The second section is an animated story with interactive exercises for the children to try. These involve adding speech marks to sentences and aims to make the pupils think about what they have just learned.

At the end of the story a score is provided to gauge how well the pupil performed. These scores are stored for viewing at the end of the session by a teacher or parent. There is also the option of extending the learning experience beyond the website through the use of a follow up exercise. Please look at the HOW TO USE THIS SITE section for further information about how to get the best from the site.
