The following points are based on the targets set in the National Literacy Strategy document for Year 3 pupils, published by the Department for Education and Employment. After using this website children should understand the basic conventions of speech punctuation through: identifying speech marks in reading; beginning to use speech marks in their own writing; using capital letters to mark the start of direct speech; using the term 'speech marks'; Children should also have increased awareness of myths, legends and fables. © Edd Hartley 2001
